Your Message: Hi, great site. Looking for information about family ancestors of Joseph Wood & Emblem, aka Emblen or Emily Gray (don't know where he was born, most likely in Yorkshire, she was born in Dover, Kent). They were married in Bridlington, East Riding, Yorkshire, 2nd Feb. 1806, Joseph's occupation listed as a private in the West Yorkshire militia at the time. John & Emblen's 3 daughters & one son John born 1815 (who is my ancestor, ggg g/father) were all christened in Birstall parish. In Heckmondwike (West Riding) trade directory 1822 Joseph Wood, John's father, is listed as a grocer & clothier in Hightown, also in later trade directory as grocer and in 1840 census still in Hightown/ Liversedge - but not in 1851. Believe the only son emigrated to Aust. in mid 1830's, but can find no reliable shipping record ie. many John Woods. One of John's sisters married a Mr. Wilman in Birstall. The only known associated family names, Boynton, possibly Abbott, Gray, Grey.
John Wood, aka John Gray Wood, married Isabella McIntosh Tough (Scottish, Perth) in Tasmania in 1839.
Other clues, John & Isabella's 1st born child (1840) (died young, called Alfred Augustus Wood) eldest surviving child Elizabeth Ann, then only son called John Taylor Wood (+ 5 more daughters following). The Taylor or Taleur is meant to have a historical link to the English Civil War period, but haven't yet found it. The Boynton is also a name that keeps popping up in middle of the names of John's children & later descendants for no explicable reason, except it's meant to be ancestral too.
Would love to hear of any ideas, we are out of them! Or any other research out there, or anyone who has come across similar names connecting. Meanwhile, the surname is seriously hard to research & it's taken years of research to get this far, by now a few of us are connecting & sharing & finding we all have similar legends of the past.
Best wishes to all seeking the origins of Wood forebears.
Dianne, Sydney

What is your name? DAVID JOHN WOOD
Where are you from? TOWNSVILLE, QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA.
Your Message: Hallo, My name is David John Wood. I live in Townsville Queensland Australia. I am retired from the Defence Force. To keep from going bonkers I am on various committees for the communities of Nome and Bentley. Family History is a past time and lasting passion for me. I have been fortunate over the years to be able to trace my Ancestors through many walks of life over many parts of the Globe. Very recently I was searching through the On-line British 1881 Census. I discovered the whereabouts of my Great Grandfather, Ernest Wood. Ernest was born 1871 in Sandford on Thames. I have discovered that brothers, Ernest (10yrs), John William (9 yrs) and Frederick Basil (13 yrs) attended Howard House on High Street in Thame, Oxford. The same Census indicates that a Lettia E Wood was staying with her Auntie Rachel Ward nee Wood, also in Thame. All children and their parents cry from Sandford on Thames. For my Auntie Betty, Brother Peter and myself this break-though is significant. Strange as it may seem the only information we have had is by word of mouth. Ernest was born in Sandford, Oxfordshire, and date uncertain. We believe the parents of the Brothers Three and Sister Lettia are John William Sr and Emma Gibbs. The Census indicates that Lettia, as well as the Brothers, were born in Sandford. Ernest and Frederick sailed to Townsville, Australia in the late 1890s. John, I believe, sailed a little later.
Ernest married Sarah Ann Hinds of Skewen, Wales in Hughenden Queensland. Sarah sailed with her Parents at the age of two years. The Hinds arrived at Cooktown, Queensland. William Howell Lesel Wood, Grand Dad is of this marriage. A sister, Devota Letticia, may well be the namesake of the younger sister. I hope this is so as it creates a picture of fond remembrance. Unfortunately I am unable to trace my Ancestors beyond John William Wood and Emma Gibbs, parents of Ernest. Like the tendril of a light mist the Family History I have gathered thus far has taken me from the sho -----
