About Mary
Mary Elizabeth Clarke was born on the 24th of Feburary 1868, in the town of Foleshill, in Warwickshire England. Her parents were George Clarke and Emma Chatwin.
In 1870, when she was about two years old, her family moved about 60 km away from Foleshill to the town of Whittington in the neighbouring County Derby. Sometime between 1878 and 1880 the family then moved from Derby to Yorkshire, this time a move of about 100 km. At the time of the 1881 census, the family was living in Bolton In Bradford, Yorkshire.
She worked as a Weaver.
She married Joseph Wood, from Yorkshire, on the 16th of April 1894 in St Mary's Church, Shipley, Yorkshire. At the time she was living at 7 Victoria Rd, Saltaire.
They had three children:
- John Wood, Born: 5 FEB 1894 - ENG
- George Stanley Wood, Born: 19 AUG 1898 - Saltaire, YKS, ENG
- Albert Edward Wood Born: 8 FEB 1901 - YKS, ENG
Interestingly for that time, records show that their first born, John, was born several months before they were married. Albert, who was known by his middle name Edward, died at age seven.
In 1899 the family moved from Saltaire, where George Stanley was born the previous year, to the nearby village of Shipley.
In 1923, a few years after her husband’s death, Mary (called Elizabeth?) emigrated to Australia, where she died at age 84 on the 28th of March 1952.
She is buried in the Preston Cemetery on Plenty Rd, Reservoir Victoria. She was buried in Area A, gravesite 781, though there is no headstone there anymore.
