Details

Joseph was born on the 2nd of March 1834 in Thaxted, Essex, England. His baptism record has him baptised on the same day.

Joseph arrived in South Australia on "The Surge" 2nd June 1853 with his brother Charles. Their brother George arrived in South Australia a couple of years later on the "Norman".

He married by licence Ellen Kirk, on the 13th of May 1856 in Christ Church, O'Halloran Hill, Adelaide, South Australia.

Ellen is listed as a minor on her wedding certificate, as she was only 17 or 18 (as listed on her death certificate) years old at the time. Joseph was 23 years old. Ellen was also illiterate, as she signed her wedding certificate by leaving her mark. At the time of marriage, Joseph was a farmer. Both were living in Hurtle Vale. The witnesses were Joseph's brother George and his wife Harriett.

Ellen was born in 1839? in Queenstown, County Cork, Ireland. Queenstown is now known as Cobh. Her father was Thomas Kirk, a gardener. Ellen came out to South Australia to live on the ship "David Malcolm", which left Plymouth on 20 Sep 1853, arriving in Adelaide on January 4, 1854. On the ships register, she is listed as aged 20, domestic servant. She may have exaggerated her age for some reason, as two years later she married as a minor, and other records would indicate that she would have been only about 14 when she came over.

Joseph's religion is listed as Church of England on the South Australian index. He worked as a farmer (as listed on his death certificate), Ellen in home duties.

Ellen had been in South Australia for five years before the family moved to Victoria. This occurred sometime between 1858 and 1861.

They had at least 10 children. Not sure about the details of Margaret, James and Robert.

Joseph died at age 56 years on the 2nd April 1890 in Maryborough, Victoria. He died of cancer of the spleen and stomach, from which he suffered for four months. The informant of his death was his son John Mason, from Cuddys Flat. Joseph was buried on the 4th of April in Maryborough.

Ellen died at age 74 years on the 28th of November 1913, at Suffolk Head? in Chiltern, Victoria. She died of Echaustion Bronchitis, which she suffered from for 10 days. Her son Edward was the informant.
