Wood Family History

Edward Alexander Daire

Edward was born 1858, although some records point up to 1863 (he may have lied about his age when he joined the Army in 1882). His parents were William Dayer and Julia Burk, both marrying for the second time. In 1871 at 13 years of age he was working as a brick maker. His army records indicate that he was educated to 4th class. He enlisted in British Army on 21st Aug 1882 at York, and a couple of years later was posted to India for 6 years. On 2 Jan 1892, while still serving in the army he married Hanna Maria Thornton, in Parish Church, Bradford, Yorkshire. They had 8 children. Edward died on the 20th January 1936 in Bradford, Yorkshire, and was buried in Windhill, Shipley, Yorkshire (see http://www.calverley.info/wind_wes_bur9_owlet.htm)

Parents

Although some records and family verbal history have his father's name as Edward Daire, it probably is William, as recorded on the marriage certificate between William Dayer and Julia Burk in June 1854 at All Saints (Mile End New Town) in the Parish of Stepney, Middlesex. After Edward's father's death about 1861, his mother Julia Burk/Burke, remarried John Hutchinson, a horse breeder, in 1864 in Yorkshire. Edward has a step-brother John Hutchinson, and also step brothers William and Richard Dayer.

note: These details are not definite, as on Edward Alexander Daire's wedding certificate, he lists his father was Edward (not William), and lists his occupation as a merchant seaman (not horsekeeper).
