Bernard Smith & Henrietta Maria Gresswell

Bernard Smith was born about 1815 in Stirling, Scotland (he was the son of John Smith Col or Sgt.21st and Elizabeth Mary Cherry). He arrived in Perth Western Australia with his parents and siblings in 1834. His father John Smith was with the 21st Fusiliers.

Henrietta Maria Gresswell was born on 3 Dec 1824 in London, Middlesex, England, the daughter of John Gresswell (a jeweller) and Henrietta Caroline Moulding. She was christened on 2nd Jan 1825 in St. James', Westminster, London, England.

Bernard and Henrietta had both travelled to the new colony separately. They were married on 19 Oct 1842 in by Special Licence, in Perth, W.A. (Revd.J.B. Wittenoom). Bernard Smith was a Catholic, Henrietta Gresswell was a Protestant.

Bernard died on 24 Jun 1892 in (aged 77 years), "Fern Hill", Adelaide Tce, Perth.. He was buried in the Roman Catholic section of the East Perth cemetery, and later reinterred to the Karrakatta Cemetery. Henrietta died on 26 Mar 1920 in (aged 95 years), "Fern Hill", Adelaide Tce., Perth, W.A.. She was also buried in Karrakatta Cemetery.
