Joseph Reilly was born in 1805 in Ireland. He is from Brannockstown, 4 miles from Trim in County Meath. He served in HM 46th Regiment of Foot, in India in 1829, travelling with his family. He served also in England, Ireland, Jersey and Guernsey. He was discharged in 1849 and enrolled as an 'Enrolled Pensioner Guard' in 1850 (ref 1).

He was married to Catherine Regan, born 1806 or 1808, and died of consumption on the 12th of November 1854 in WA.

He arrived on the convict ship 'Pyrenees' in Fremantle Western Australia in 1853, with his wife Catherine Regan and children Joseph Thomas and Phillip.

He is listed on a marriage entry in 10 April 1866 - one of his children?

Although the Pyrenees was a convict ship, Joseph Reilly was not a convict. Joseph, as a sergeant 46th Regiment, was probably was taking advantage of a free passage for retired soldiers to a new land and opportunity. There is an unconfirmed source that he retired from the British Army in about 1848. Five years later he was arriving in Perth as a Pensioner Guard. (more on the Pensioner Guards).
