Charles Mason was born in 1835 in Thaxted, Essex, England. His parents were John Mason and Sarah Barrett.
Charles arrived in South Australia on "The Surge"" in 1853 with his brother Joseph.
His first wife was Catherine Gleeson. They married in 1856 in Victoria. Catherine was born 1835 in Neagh, County Tipperary, Ireland (daughter of John Gleeson and Margaret Ryan). She died 3 Aug 1867 in Coy's Diggings, Baillieston, and was buried on the 6th of August 1867 in Murchison Cemetery. Her death certificate says she was 19 when she married, making her born 1837? She came out to Australia in 1854.
His first wife died on the 3rd August 1867. At the time Charles was living at Coy's Diggings. They had 8 children.
Charles married again, Sarah Owen, and had two children with her. Sarah Owen was born about 1846 in Montgomery, Wales.
Charles was a miner.
Charles died 6 Sep 1885 in Coy's Diggings and buried 10 sept 1885 in Whroo Cemetery. He died of Haemoptysis (bursting of blood vessel in lungs). He suffered from phthisis (old name for Tuberculosis) for a year before death. The informant on his death certificate was his son John, who was also a miner at Coys Diggings.
