Robert Mitchell Campbell was born about 1829 in Renton, Scotland (as was listed on his daughter's birth certificate). His father may have been named William as this is what is on Robert's death certificate. Another source lists his father as David.

Johanna Turnbull was born about 1836, in Peebles Scotland. This small town is located 23 miles (37 km) south of Edinburgh. Johanna was the daughter of George Turnbull and Isabella Nichol. Her father George Turnbull was born circa 1810 at Edinburgh, Scotland, and was listed as a baker / journeyman on Robert and Johanna's marriage certificate.

Robert married Johanna Turnbull on 17 January 17 January 1856 or 1857 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. At the time of marriage, Robert was 28, Johanna was 22. Robert's residence at the time was South Renton, while Johanna was living in Edinburgh, working as a housemaid / domestic servant.

They left for Australia as Assisted Immigrants not long afterwards. They sailed on the ship Maldon from Liverpool to Melbourne. It left Liverpool on May 2 1857, and arrived in Melbourne on the 26th July 1857. with their newborn child Isabella. They came as . Johanna was 22 years old, her husband was 28.

Johanna died in Victoria not long after the birth of her child, possibly as a consequence of giving birth. Their only child was Isabella Maldon Campbell, who was born on board the Maldon on the 17th May 1857 .

Robert listed his occupation as a dry stone dyker on his marriage certificate. This is the same as a dry stone waller?

Robert died of consumption at age 53 years on the 18th of June 1881 in Sale, Victoria. He suffered from the condition for about 4 years.
